Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Sam Burney on September 14, 2012:

Terry and I were classmates at West Point, but it was while attending graduate school at Georgia Tech in the early '70s that we really got to know each other well. It was there that Terry and I, along with Al Vanderbush (USMA '61) and a few others who were in the IE Department at the time, learned lessons that would have great impact on our lives...some had to do with the OR/SA curriculum we were immersed in at Tech, but a very important one for the three of us was that the game of golf allowed us to exercise our competitive instincts in a fun fashion while we formed lasting friendships. Terry was a bachelor at the time, living in a new apartment complex on the east side of Atlanta, and the three of us would meet frequently early on Saturday mornings at a then-new golf course at Stone Mountain. There we would further our understanding of probability and statistics as it applied to the 'two dollar Nassau,' the press bet, and other forms of golf wagering. Regardless of the outcome, Terry was always the kind of good-natured soul who was a joy to be with...he had a great sense of humor and a constant desire to 'never sweat the small stuff.' I ran into Terry on several other occasions during our Army careers, but the times we spent together in Atlanta were really special. He, and his good-natured smirk, will be missed!!
