Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dagmar Batts on January 25, 2005:

Phil, my friend, soulmate and love, you are the kindest, most loving and most gentle person I have ever known. Our friendship and love, which spanned 30 years, is so memorable. No matter what we were always there for each other. We shared so much laughter and happiness, our drives thru the Louisiana county side, The Jazz Fest, our visit to Manassas with your classmate to retrace your roots, the trips we had planned. Our visit to West Point for your 40th reunion, getting up at 4:40 AM to attend revelry and Mass with the Cadets. The fun and laughter we shared with Dave, Beth, Bob, Cynthia and Dan, ah, there were so many. The ease with which you met your classmates at the reunion and the stories you shared after many years were priceless. I will never forget that beautiful smile, the twinkling eyes and your great sense of humor.

The helping hand, which was always there for somebody in need, the dedication to your family and people you loved and respected. The evenings of listening to you, the experiences in Vietnam, our time together, your phone calls are all my treasures.

Your great pride of West Point, assuring that I would become part of it and your dreams of getting involved in the Class of '64 will always be engraved in my memory. The hopes and dreams we dared to share and live, so abruptly taken from us, will forever be part of me.

Vous toujours aurez mon amour, comme j'avais le votre. Repose dans Phil de paix jusqu'a ce que nous sommes ensemble encore.

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free.
I am following the path God laid for me.
I took God's hand when I heard the call;
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work or play
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I found that place at the close of day.
