Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jerry D. Mckinney on July 12, 2012:

When I got to Delta Company in Sept 67, There was an air of pride that showed everywhere. I couldn't figure it out at first, Than later realized that it was because of the Leadership of CPT Peter Elson.

We fought side by side through many battles, saw others die during the time, but Pete was always there at the front. He was a true leader in every way, and the men felt it. We lost contact for a while after he departed Vietnam, but connected back here in Hawaii. All the years faded away as we saw Delta Company emerge to deploy to Iraq, the war we had fought was being transferred to a new era of Delta Hounds. Pete never forgot what it ment to be a Delta Hound, Every day at 1:27 pm, and 2:27 PM, he would stop what he was doing and say a Prayer for our deployed troops.
He would lead the Quarterly Prayer group for the FRG's in the Battalion, and loved D Quad like his real home, where the 2nd Battalion lives.

We have lost one of the great Military leaders of our Generation, one who never boasted about his accomplishments, but lived his life so others could see. I spent a lot of time with Pete, these last few days were harder than the times we spent in Vietnam. There we took care of each other, but now I could only watch as he slipped away to the arms of his personal savior. A true warrior, husband, father and wolfhound Brother. The world is a lesser place now, but God needed another Angel.

Rest in Peace Delta 6, until we are together again!
