Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Joe Zengerle on November 20, 2021:

Rusty was a plebe in Company E-1, and I was a plebe in Company F-1, right next door in Central Area. He was a figure of unusual appeal, with a ready laugh and cheerful willingness to undertake any assignment, with attractive leadership potential. We overlapped in some activities during our cadet days, but did not stay in touch after graduation. Then in late December 1967, I arrived in Saigon while Rusty was there, happy to show me the ropes around MACV headquarters with his familiar easy competence shortly before the Tet Offensive, an easier time in a city where we could eat dinner at our BOQ, the Khai Minh Hotel, and later have a glass of wine downtown under high ceiling fans on the veranda of the Intercontinental Hotel. I learned that he married Peggy and told my wife Lynda who, it turned out, went to school in White Plains, NY, with her, where they were early classmates for a time. Rusty and I saw each other at a couple of reunions, the last time at our 50th, where Peggy treated us to drinks. Thinking about Rusty made me smile for over 60 years; it always will.
