Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Mike McKinley on April 29, 2010:

Bob was my roommate during the second half of our plebe year. His sense of humor made the challenges of plebe year seem surmountable and put a positive spin on my difficult moments as a plebe in D-1. One very special memory I have of Bob, was being present when he was introduced to Cathy at Camp Buckner. It was obvious that it was true love right from the start! It was really a pleasure to be in Bob's company. He consistently enjoyed life and always welcomed the chance to help his friends and to form new friendships. This attitude was transmitted to all who came in contact with him and became one of his most memorable qualities.

His enthusiasm for athletics was something he willingly shared with his friends. Bob's athletic ability in skiing, baseball, and tennis is well known, but one sport never mentioned is swimming. I remember him as a powerful swimmer and will never forget having to "rescue" him from the pool in our life saving drill. Talk about a challenge--I almost drowned. It was Bob's enthusiastic advice that encouraged me to try Army Artic combat skis on the slope at West Point without any lessons from him except "don't worry about turning or stopping, it will come naturally." Skiing became one of the joys of my life and in recent years I had the pleasure of skiing with Bob and Cathy in Utah and Colorado. I shall miss Bob's generous spirit, enduring humor and his friendship and will always feel honored to have been in his company. Be thou at peace.
