Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jack Price on October 19, 2004:

Tom, you would have been proud of the turn out, but might not have recognzed some of us! Forty years after we graduated, we all came back to that same parade ground where we all marched in together that day back in the summer of 1960. One of our functions was to visit the cemetery, and have a classmate say some words at each grave site. I spoke at yours.

On the way we stopped as a class, in front of the old chapel, and had a memorial service, followed by our Glee Club grads singing The Corps. In front of the chapel, there is a planter with black, flat, oval shaped rocks. I slipped one into my pocket.

The class then dispersed to the various grave sites. I was surprised to see that your tombstone was a bit out of plumb to the east, and took a moment to straighten her up! In a moment, a small crowd had gathered.

I talked about your family, how we had kept in touch over the years, and the times we had shared during our cadetship. Your love of winter sports, the times I had watched you glide on those cross country skis around the Plain under winter skies. How we took Christmas leave to Bernuda to scuba dive together. Our plans to be at Ft Lewis together after Ranger and Airborne Schools.

Some had forgotten how you died. I told them. It was a beautiful day at West Point. We are getting old, but our memories of you are eternally young. We have missed growing old alongside you. But, we do not forget. I placed the river rock atop your tombstone...

Hope it's still there when next I am
