Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Geoffrey H. Kleb, Jr. on July 14, 2023:

Here were are in 2023 already - where did the time go? I retired from my private sector job four years early last year. I now live in Germany (remembering that my father was stationed here twice in Garmisch and once in Heidelberg). I will never forget how proud I was when he showed up to commission me as a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve back in 1988 - after I was an enlisted man and then took ROTC in college.

My son - his grandson - is grown and living on his own, as are my brother's two children. I got my honorable discharge from the Army Reserve nearly thirty years ago and went through a divorce, two careers and some "interesting" times.

My now-wife is a retired Army lieutenant colonel whom I met late in 2017. She was formerly in military intelligence and later a JAG officer. She currently works as a DOD civilian. We both visited my dad's Arlington gravesite and thought that it was so sad that he never got to meet her. Since we live in Germany, we obviously think of him often.

When we recently visited Garmisch and saw the places we lived as children, it was eye-opening. My son and his girlfriend came over here from the USA in May and it was fun to retrace some of our steps from many decades ago. My father passed away when my son Matthew was only 15 months old, so his only memories are from photos and stories.

May he continue to rest in peace in Arlington. We love you, Dad!!
