Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Marcia Castetter McCarter on May 28, 2013:

It is rather odd at times in our memories of childhood friends that particular events or particular people come to the front.

Reaching back into the seven decades of my life, a friend, a playmate has worried me for such a long time.

For years I've diligently searched for ( as I knew him Jack Little ).......but now I know Lt. Col. Jon T. Little....West Point Class of 1964 and deceased May 24, 1987.

Jack and I attended kindergarten through early high school together. As little four and five year old students, the bus driver would sometimes help us up to that first big step on the bus. Maybe that was the first of Jack's "big steps".

His father, Tom, was transferred to the Louisville, KY area and I lost track of Jack.

We, too, were neighbors.....he lived just one street behind my parents' home ....... and we were "playmates" as youngsters. You know back when children would play out of doors from early morning until our mothers would call us in as it began to darken. We neighbor kids sure did know how to play. We grew up in Plainfield, IN, Hendricks County....where the Little and Calbert names were counted long in the history. Cousins of Jack, Richard Calbert, Gretchen Calbert Coronato, and Jill Burns Hadley, continue to be my best of friends - though we are scattered from where we called our "hometown".

I came upon the article by Ross W. Simpson, High Altitude Ejection. Thank you sir ...... now I know more about my childhood friend.

Jack would have graduated in the class of 1960 Plainfield High School, Plainfield, IN but his future said that you folks, West Point Military Academy, would gain a wonderful person to call friend and classmate.

We are all destined to run out of days from the moment we take our first breath, but Jack's days ran out way too soon.

Lt. Col. Jon Thomas Little - Soar my friend !!!
