Be Thou At Peace

Posted by R Peter Kufeke on June 9, 2022:

One fond memory of Tom Kullman was crossing paths while passing through a Brigade firebase at Dak To, RVN. Tom's 175 Howitzers were firing at the Ho Chi Minh trail on the Vietnam, Laotian, and Cambodian border. Fortunately I listened to Tom's admonition to get into a bunker out of the muzzle blast of the big guns.
As legal counsel to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, I recall Tom taking exception to the harsh treatment of enemy combatants. This would lead to our soldiers being treated in a similar fashion.
The last time I saw Tom was several years before Alzheimer's took him away. Diane and I visited Linda and him in Virginia. We went to Mount Vernon. That somehow seemed appropriate in some small way to pay tribute to George Washington.

As I reflect on these moments, the words, images and tune of The Corps come to mind. "...we of the Corps are treading where they of the Corps have trod. They are here in ghostly assemblage the men of the Corps long dead..."
