Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ernie Accorsi on December 15, 2022:

Gary was my cousin but we grew up a few yards from each other so we were more best friends than relatives
Gary was a great football player and received offers from several major programs when he graduated from Hershey High School: Michigan, Duke, Penn among others.
He chose West Point but aggravated a high school shoulder injury at best tactics there and never really played much No arthroscopic surgery or MRI
Scans on those days so no one knew how damaged the shoulder was.
Gary was quiet but strong and a superior student. Once he started his active duty career we didnt see much of each but on the 1970s we both moved to Baltimore and became closer friends than we were growing up. I can still remember the morning he died suddenly at age 40. For me, it was as shocking as when Kennedy was assassinated. I will never forget that day.
Gary was everyones hero in high school. Powerful , handsome , smart and one of those middle linebackers who seemed to make every tackle, sideline to sideline Gary was a fan of the Washington football team and even though I worked for the Baltimore Colts we never let that conflict get on the way of a deep friendship.
I grew up a Navy fan but because of Gary I have rooted for Army ever since.
