Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Rich Boerckel on February 24, 2011:

Great guy, full of humor. My favorite Jim Scheiner story:

When we were Firsties, Jim took myself and a couple of other guys (you know who you are; it's been too long for me to remember) down to either Jim's or his girlfriend's home (another addle-brained moment) in NYC or Long Island (okay, so maybe I don't remember this as well as I thought) for weekend. However, the important part I do remember: his girlfriend fixed the rest of us up with dates--good looking ones too.

We all went out for dinner and then some clubbing on Sat. night, getting home way too late and way too tipsy. The next morning, we were awakened about 11 in the morning to calls to come down for breakfast. And what a breakfast it was!

Being in a Jewish household, we were treated to a brunch that was mind- and appetite-boggling! There were bagels and lox with all the trimmings, Whitefish, blintzes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pastries, and who knows what else to eat, along with Orange Blossoms, Bloody Marys, and (of course) strong coffee to drink. I couldn't believe my eyes, and I'm not sure we did it justice what with our somewhat queasy stomachs. But I remember trying my darndest!

At least, that's how I remember it. ;-)

Jim was, indeed, a great guy with a smile and gift of laughter that probably defused many a tense moment at USMA. We'll miss him.
