Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Fred DeGroot on February 19, 2001:

It was with shock and a deeply saddened heart that I heard the news of Wayne's death. He and I were friends and classmates in a small high school in Port Washington, Wisconsin. Wayne went off to join the long grey line at West Point while I attended the Air Force Academy. We kept in touch sporadically over the years as we pursued our respective careers and our paths would occassionally cross.

I'd think of Wayne as a man who always had his act together. He was a confident, competent, gentleman with a quick sense of humor, who's love for his family shined brightly. I made the habit of inquiring about him whenever I'd run across Army officers I thought might know him. I remember one such occassion while attending a senior military college a few years ago. The response I received was something to the effect: Oh yes, Wayne's a real comer, an E F Hutton sort of guy, he does a lot more listening than talking, but when he has something to say people listen.

The world is a lesser place without him. My heartfelt condolences go out to Susie, Brian and Jenny who bear the greatest burden of this tragic loss.
