Be Thou At Peace

Wayne Scholl Eulogy

I will never forget Wayne standing on a hill overlooking a contaminated site, and listening to him describe what he saw happening on that site 10 years from now. Wayne was a man of vision; no doubt frustrated by the lack of vision and slow pace of the remediation business. He was a man who believed in what he was doing, and made me believe in it too. He was hard working and a man with imagination; something too few of us have. He was kind and honest; a man everyone liked.

Wayne loved his wife and children, and especially his baby granddaughter. When I heard of his death I reacted with disbelief if for no other reason because he loved that baby and his family so much. With such love I could only conclude his death was not of his making, but was the result of a chemical imbalance brought on by depression and medications used to calm his tremors. Wayne's nature was one of love and understanding, thoughtfulness and life. He loved life too much to take it. He saw what we could not see; he loved with his whole heart; he was kind and reassuring, and positive- always positive. He often concealed bad news to protect us, his troops, just to keep us positive.

Today, we are surrounded by a world of increasing greed, selfishness and pressure, where evil concurs good. There are too few good men like Wayne Scholl left. Nice guys finish last and the good die young, and Wayne Scholl was both good and nice. He was a decent, thoughtful man, and I wish there were more like him. The world would be a much better place.

I will miss my good friend and colleague, Wayne Scholl, and I will think of him often. I was PROUD to know him. And when his vision comes true one day, as I know it will, I will stand on that same hill and say, "WAYNE, YOU WERE RIGHT!"
