Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jonathan Scholl on February 26, 2001:

Uncle Wayne always had a larger than life quality about him when I was young. To a six-year-old--as I was when I first remember visiting Wayne, Suzy, Brian, and Jenny in California--what can seem more mammoth than an Army Colonel who's not only your dad's big brother, but also has his own pool?! But during that same vacation, Uncle Wayne showed me that he was a caring, compassionate man. One day, my brother Rob and I went out to walk the family's colossal, overpowering canine beasts (actually 2 Dachshunds, but remember, I was six). Well, one of the dogs, Dan, got away from us, and we ran back to the house hysterical. We needed to go find him right away. Uncle Wayne took us in the car and drove us until we found Dan--probably still within a block of the house. We could finally be put at ease. To me, he will always be a greatly esteemed man who still found time to be a great uncle.
