Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Denny Coll '65 on March 10, 2005:

Even after all these years, I still remember distinctly the call from Susie informing me of your death. I could not believe it then and I have only slowly come to accept it now.

I should have sensed, old buddy, when you called me several months before, seeking assistance with your new engineering venture, that something was just not right. This was not the Wayne that I had known over these 40 "and a butt" years. But I didn't, and for that, I will always have a deep regret.

The Wayne that I knew was the fun loving guy from "Port" whose name is indelibly engraved on a telephone pole somewhere in that lovely, lake-side Wisconsin town. The guy that came to his buddy's rescue when the buddy's OAO's father had a change of mind ref. his daughter marrying a soldier. The guy that had the funniest little weiner dog ever seen in Deutschland. The up and coming young Engineer responsible for cutting down that fateful tree on the Korean DMZ after the idiots on the other side had killed some of our own, the guy that had the foresight to buy the least expensive, smallest little house you would ever see, but which just happened to be a five iron away from Geo. Washington's Mt. Vernon home and a house which probably appreciated in value 10 fold during his time in the Army. Or how about that crazy laugh every time you would get "Gracie" on another one of your subtle jokes. The stories could go on and on - that is what a Scribe is all about.

But I also remember the final farewell on that rise overlooking "Port" as we all bid farewell to our comrade in arms and walking away back to the car believing that you were in a better place.

I hope you are. You are missed terribly, my dear friend!
