Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Fred Smith on February 20, 2010:

Karl was my Plebe year roomate and the pressures of that year provided both of us challenges that we teamed up to respond, react, succumb, and rise up against. We both got got knocked around our fair share but picked ourselves and each other up. Over the years we shared a lot of laughs because of this shared experience.

Karl helped me a lot with academics that first year. I may have helped him by being able to draw attention of the upper classes away from him a bit, but living on the first floor in Old Central Area allowed everyone to go right by our door. How convienent. We muddled through and were better for it, but that shared experience, especially after our third roomate was found in math, forged a personal long term bond.

Karl was a good friend and a good man whose quiet strength was always there even in 1961-1962. The world is a better place because of the life and example of Karl.
