Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Robert M.S. Anderson on June 25, 2012:

Barbara and I were saddened to learn of Leighton's passing June 18. It didn't seem that long ago that we were exchanging emails with Leighton and Janet or back and forth with their son Chris.

Leighton and I never met at the Academy. I was in First Regiment and he in Second. Not much interaction occurred due to different scheduled use of facilities, locations for Parade Formations, etc. However, through several months' correspondence, a picture of Leighton emerged. What I saw was a kind, strong, family man, determined to give his best to whatever he undertook, beloved of family and friends, upright in character, and a son of West Point who lived its motto: Duty, Honor, Country.

We were blessed as Leighton and his family shared the struggles, hopes, and insights into family life right up until Leighton's decision to return home enroute to his rendezvous with his Maker. Leighton has run his course on earth. Now it may be said by family, friends, and The Long Gray Line: Well done, Leighton. Be thou at peace.

We here in California will continue to lift up the Atteberry Family as they struggle with their great loss. And Leighton, I'll look you up on the other side.
