Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dick Phalan '67 on April 18, 2015:

"I came to know Bernie first on the intramural track team for Company C1 in the Fall of 1963. I found him to be a great guy, despite the plebe-upperclassman divide. In addition to running track together that year and the next, I also came to know and admire him more as a company mate for two years. I was shocked and very saddened to learn of his death in Vietnam at such a young age. I was privileged to be selected as a member of the honor guard for his interment at the West Point cemetery in the Fall of 1966. Seeing his recently widowed wife at the service saddened me even more, especially when I learned that she was also widowed from a previous West Point graduate, also killed in Vietnam. If memory serves, I also believe that she had recently borne Bernie's child, as well as being the mother of a child from her tragically ended first marriage. I can't imagine the pain she must have been enduring at that time. I wish Bernie peace, and his widow consolation and reunion with him in eternity."
