Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Joe Barkley on January 30, 2021:

Diane and I were very sad to learn of the passing of our friend and class mate and fellow "Easy Duce" company mate. He was at once, one of the funniest and most sarcastic people I knew.

"Cow year," Don lived on the third floor of the 19th Division in Old Central Area; "Gil Gilchrist" and I lived on the second floor. Don always passed our room coming and going and always stuck his head, and body sometimes too, into the room to pass a funny or sarcastic comment about life as a cadet in Company E -- 2. Both he and Gil smoked so there was a lot of that in the room too. It was just constantly funny.

We saw Don at our wedding in July 1965 and then we just did not run into each other until the most recent few reunions. Don was still as funny and sarcastic as ever and still had the same hairline too.

The world and the "Long Gray Line" are just a bit emptier and a bit less funny.

"Well done, Don."
