Saint Elmo Parlette Tyner

West Point, 1965

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jack Jacobs on November 29, 2021:

It is something of a cliche to describe someone as a Renaissance man, but Step Tyner surely was the kind of brilliant intellect that merits the description. I learned more from Tyner "about both soldiering and intellectual pursuits" than from dozens of others who claimed to know what they were talking about. He insisted that anything was possible and proved it: with no previous training, he stripped, prepared and painted his ancient BMW 2002, producing a concours-ready machine in brilliant Tijuana Taxi Yellow. And it was he who introduced me to Laphroiag whiskey, for which I shall be eternally grateful. But most of all, he was a loyal friend on whose support and assistance one could rely at the most difficult and trying times. It was Step whom you would want in your foxhole, and all who knew him will miss him terribly.
