Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jack Lyons on December 4, 2007:

As I grew up in Western PA (Pittsburgh), Don & I would occasionally find ourselves going back together on leave, on a flight, a bus ride from the city up to the Academy, or arranging dates for guys when Army played Pitt. He was Jewish, I was Catholic, and we always had fun conversations about our limited social life as cadets, and what the future would hold after graduation for two guys from a blue-collar city. Eight years ago my dad died of Alzheimers; my mother nursed him right up to the end, in their home. He would go to the Univ. of Pittsburgh for all kinds of testing and observation to see if the drugs were retarding his decline. My mother was with him every step of the way. My dad also had a great sense of humor. So Don's passing, and the support he had along the way by those who loved him, resonates with me on several levels. May I be as good a father and grandfather as my dad was and apparently as Don was. Perhaps they are in a place now where they are already discussing football and joking together, the way Don & I used to do. May they both rest in peace.
