Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Richard D. Mohlere on May 14, 2014:

I first met Steve when I went to my assigned room in the unfriendly atmosphere of Beast Barracks on that miserable hot day of 6 July 1961. He and Bill McCreary were to be my roommates for the next two months. Steve was always a terrific personality and a good friend during those difficult times. Not only did he perform all of his assigned duties in a timely and professional manner, he also had time to help me whenever I needed help. And I needed a lot of help. Steve had a wonderful sense of humor and made that Beast Barracks a lot more enjoyable than it could have been. He was a terrific athlete and demonstrated his prowess during the many physical exercise activities we enjoyed over that two month misery. I was assigned to a company far from the friendly environs of the second regiment and did not run into Steve very often. However, whenever I did, I experienced the pleasure of seeing a genuine friend, a superb Army soldier, and very nice person. Steve was one of the very nice memories I have of West Point. I shall always remember him fondly and will miss him.
