Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ralph Locurcio on April 7, 2020:

Nate, of course, was a prince of a friend and a great soldier and officer. Always smiling, everyone's friend, rock steady and just the epitome of the good people that God intended us all to be. I was saddened to hear of his passing. He's one of our classmates who will always remain in my heart.

I have some pix of Nate in happier times in my archives. The scene was the Firstie Trip in 1964... Ft. Benning Ga.... July 4th weekend. We were given the weekend off .... so the inmates pictured here decided that Florida was the closest kool vacation spot. We collectively researched several means of transport: rent a plane, hire a bus, a van, but came up short on cash. In the end, our collective budget could only fund this stake body truck. We spent the rest of our cash on beer and drove to Ft. Walton Beach in Florida near Pensacola... about 4-6 hours. Since the designated drivers could not drink beer on the trip, they refused to stop for pee breaks... so we had to pee off the back of the truck... and onto passing cars! Once at the beach, we had no money for a hotel so we lived on the beach for 2+ days and nights in the scorching sun and got roasted with sunburn. The trip back was uneventful until Monday morning at Ft Benning when the sergeants hoisted our sunburned bodies into the "swing-landing" trainer harnesses and swung and dropped (sadistically) us onto the rough wood chip padded floor in Airborne school. Truly a memorable trip!

I don't see any way to post a photo on this page, so if interested in the photos pls email me: "locurcio@fit.edu".
