Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bob Frank on April 15, 2018:

As Plebes together in L-1, I realized immediately that Don was as stalwart as they come. Clearly, he was going to be a great officer. When he branched Armor and I Infantry, I had my doubts that our paths would cross much in the Army. Returning from Vietnam and arriving at Ft. Knox, I was surprised that Don and I would be in the same Career Course (AOAC 1-69). We played sports together and had other good times. Both he and I received our orders to return to Vietnam. Much to both our surprise, he was going to fill an Infantry slot, just like me. I was able to visit Don in Huntsville after he completed an Infantry refresher before our return to combat. I stayed with his parents and him, and learned a bit more about the family. Don's father had been in the Army in the 20s thru WWII. Great stories about the Old Army. Departing, not knowing when we might see each other again, it took four years before we were both back at West Point on the Staff and Faculty. Turns out that we were both married to Army Nurses! All of our experiences and interactions just reinforced what I thought about Don as early as 1961. He was a great officer, a devoted husband, loving father and great friend. As a Classmate, he embodied our motto: STRENGTH AND DRIVE

I rejoice on my good fortune to have known Don. Clearly, it must be said: Well Done, Be Thou at Peace.
