Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Rollie Stichweh on April 22, 2020:

One of the most important days of my life occurred in August, 1961 during the latter days of Beast Barracks.A huge relief from the tough days of new cadet training came when it was time to attend tryouts for the Plebe football team. As a kid recruited for the quarterback position, the first day was with the 12 other new cadets, recruited from around the country hoping to make the team. Our coach, Tom Cahill, pulled me aside and suggested it might make sense to switch over to running back - a better opportunity to make the cut. On day 2 I reported to the running back location and met three of the best athletes in my life - Don Parcells; John Seymour; and John T. Johnson. Little did we know that on that day we would quickly become inseparable for four years as cadets, nor could we imagine that those special friendships would form a brotherhood lasting a lifetime. On the field, JT was one of the toughest competitors who ever played for Army, on both offense and defense. No surprise that he was one of the most actively recruited high school athletes recruited in the South. Off the field, he was the classic southern gentleman - kind, supportive, caring ... with a huge smile and twinkle in the eye for everyone. He was so special - as a son, husband to the beautiful Mary, brother, Dad, Grandpa and friend. He has joined Donnie and Johnny and is in good hands. He will be missed but has left us all with wonderful memories which will last forever. Love you, JT! Rollie
