Herbert J. Smith, III, Lt. Col., US Army, retired, 68, Lansdowne, VA, died May 4, 2010, at Loudoun Hospital.

A Mass celebrating his life will be held at 10:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, at the Ft. Myer Old Post Chapel, Ft. Myer, VA. Interment will follow with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. On-line condolences may be shared at www.LoudounFuneralChapel.com.

Lt. Col. Smith was born May 27, 1941, in Saginaw. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1965. As a highly decorated career military officer, he served two tours in Vietnam and various other posts including Germany, Korea and Hawaii before his last assignment at the Pentagon as senior military assistant to the Secretary of the Army.

After retiring in 1985, he joined Hill & Knowlton, Inc., an international public relations firm as director, Military Affairs and vice-president. In 1988, he formed his own consulting firm, HJS International, Inc. He enjoyed reading, cooking and helping those less fortunate than himself. He was a Mason affiliated with Lodge No. 17, Washington, DC.

Preceding him in death was his mother, Helen Courneya Smith.

Smith is survived by his wife of 23 years, Carole of Lansdowne; two children, Caroline Marie and her husband Bill Nosal of Herndon, VA, and Peter Herbert and his wife Sarah Smith of Chevy Chase, MD; father: Herbert J. Smith Jr. of Alma; sister, Shirley Bismark of Saginaw; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
