| When we were at USMA Hal and I were on track for 4 years. He was a a speedster in the 1/4 mile, the 600 meter, and the the half mile runs. When we graduated we were assigned as 2d LT's in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell. I believe Hal had the distiction of becoming the BN CO of the 1/501st Infantry ( Airborne ) as a 2 LT when the 1/501st changed colors and and became the 4/503d. Hal was left back as the officer in charge of the 1/501st when he and LTC "Iron Mike Healy" changed command and Hal received the colors and the equipment as the new BN CO of the 1/501st.
