Be Thou At Peace

Posted by John Vann on November 29, 2012:

Ric, I remember your strong stands in 1983-1984 on behalf of the 4-star field commanders, who opposed the Army Chief of Staff's plans to "do more with less" by building "light" divisions. Your work at Office of the Secretary of Defense took courage, wisdom, ability to handle extremely difficult negotiations, and a good sense of humor -- blended with lots of hard work. And, your work helped form the landmark Goldwater-Nichols Act that made major improvements in our entire Defense Planning process. Though I didn't know you as a cadet but from a distance, I appreciated the privilege of watching you influence major decisions about our national security that many never knew were taking place. Your smiles and grace under pressure must have brought smiles with great pride from your many family predecessors who served, especially those from the Long Gray Line. I know your classmates must smile when they think of Ric Wetherill and his many valuable contributions to the Army and his country -- during an all too brief stay with us all. Rest in Peace, dear friend!
