Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Daniel J. Donaghy on December 5, 2017:

Although I have not spoken to Ziggy Roebuck since graduation, we were both members of Company F-2 back in 1965. Ziggy gave to me a number of unique thoughts that I have related to others during the last fifty or so years.

He taught me the proper pronunciation of the city of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania as Wilkes Berry. Although I have had little occasion to use this, it sits in the depths of my memory "just in case".

We were both members of the F-2 Catholic Chapel Squad and I often walked to the chapel with him. He always dragged me to a front pew with the admonition, "If you have to be somewhere, you should always sit in the front row, and you might learn something". I have sat in the front row of many meetings and lectures ever since often lecturing to my fellows on the value of "Ziggy's Rule".

And, although he (in my opinion) was not a very good hymn singer, he insisted on singing very loud, attracting to us the attention of the civilian churchgoers. When I asked him why he sang so loud, he responded that, "God likes it". Since then I've always tried to make sure I know who my audience is.

So, I am sure right now Ziggy is singing and God is smiling. I am smiling at the thought.
