Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bob Frank on April 6, 2021:

We shared so many friends in common even though we did not generally run in the same circles. Your survival skills were tested early on with a "real" Plebe Year, that is, a year as a Ducrot in D-1. A number of strong Classmates came through that experience, and I am at a loss all these years later to understand how each of you did it. D-1 was HELL!

These last few days, I have been talking to your comrades from the 4/503 Airborne Infantry. Their stories square with what I know of you - a remarkable, dedicated leader, who looked out for his soldiers and his comrades - and who accomplished the mission. You showed the same strength in combat that you exhibited as a Plebe!

When I got to know you really well, you were deeply involved in the transfer of the Panama Canal to the Panamanians. Long hours and intense effort went into ensuring that the US Army interests, as well as the nation's interests, were protected in this unique transfer of sovereignty. You never bragged about your contributions to this major foreign policy initiative.

I always enjoyed our times together. You were down-to-earth, warm, and respectful of others as we all gathered for social gatherings. Your low-key manner belied a rich set of experiences that in every way embodied Duty, Honor, Country.

Be thou at peace!
