Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Jay Vaughn on November 19, 2019:

Jack and I were in the same Beast Barracks squad, the 3rd squad of the 3rd platoon of the 3rd New Cadet Company. The three threes made it easy to remember and we needed every bit of help we could get. I was in awe of Jack's strength and athletic ability. We were almost the same size and weight and he was approximately ten time stronger and more agile than me. We went on to be E-1 company mates. He was one of those guys you could totally depend on to help a classmate. He was also one of those guys you would never forget if for no other reason because of his laugh. Some said he sounded like a braying jackass. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always ready for some new prank. We met in the Plebe boxing ring and Jack knocked me completely out. I woke up looking up at Punchy Creighton's big smile. The knockout was followed by lunch and we were at the same table. I was invited to say "The Days" but could not remember what year it was. The upperclassmen noted this failing and wanted to know why? I gave Jack full credit for my memory lapse. The good news was that we were told to "fall out" and eat all we wanted. Thanks, Jack. We will sure miss you.
