Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Tommy Thompson on October 24, 2016:

I sent this to Donna

John was my roommate Plebe year at West Point and a good friend for the last three years as well. Because I went into the Air Force, He is one of the few classmates I have kept in contact with since graduation. I am greatly saddened to hear of his sudden death, I believe I talked to him via email only a few months ago. He was very concerned and supportive of me following my recent hip replacement operation, and he talked about visiting for a little golf in Hawaii.

As a roommate he was a great guy, very easy going and unbelievably relaxed in our tense environment. We were both athletes (I was on the Wrestling Team) and this presented a great challenge keeping up with the academic and military regimen, but we worked together and got by. I am still impressed how John could study while sleeping on his textbook....some sort of osmosis we theorized.

I credit John for making me a big Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison fan back in the day. We rigged our portable clock radio and record player to turn on 10 minutes before reveille to gently wake us before the cannons and bugles went off. He spoke of Donna often and we knew he was very much in love.

I would like to express my condolences to Donna and the family as well as all John's classmates and friends. Grip Hands......
