Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bob Bradley on October 31, 2016:

Got to know John when I retired to San Diego 12 years ago. He and Denny Lewis had bought a couple buildings in San Diego at the suggestion of Dave Kuhn, who owned property and a golf course in the area. BTW, one of the buildings they had built, and the "gray" water [recycled] line was mistakenly connected to the fresh water input valve, which resulted in a 2-3 year debacle with their tenants, the water district and lawyers. It took over 2 years to diagnose the problem, but tenants were constantly complaining that something wasn't right about the water. Tests by one of the tenants finally showed that it was indeed recycled "gray" water, so then the lawsuits started. That's how I got to know John [and Dennis, Carter, Dennis Jr, et al] because he was continually coming down from Liguna Niguel, 1 hour north of San Diego. Case was finally settled and John, Denny and Carter came out okay.

I knew John had been a terrific Army football and he proved to be just as good a friend. He was always up-beat, with fantastic stories about his days at West Point and later. I came to realize that John, who didn't take West Point academics seriously [to put it mildly], was REALLY smart. He was always able to keep numerous balls in the air at once.

I would see John every few months over the years he came to San Diego until they sold the buildings a couple years ago. Missed seeing him after that because he was always so entertaining to be around, the life of the party.

John left a wonderful family and legacy. I'll remember him always. He was a remarkable friend.
