Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Eddy Dye on September 30, 2021:

Jesse was my roommate during the second semester of plebe year. He was from Grenada, MS. about 70 miles south of my home, Memphis. From the beginning he and I suffered at the mess tables for our inability to pronounce oil (me) and salad (Jesse) in a way that the obviously disadvantaged northern upperclassmen could understand, maybe because they were laughing too much to actually hear that beautiful Southern dialect. Jesse was a gentle soul and extremely even tempered. I never heard him complain, grip, or use profanity. He was involved with the football team, and I remember him running off the field with the kicking tee after every kickoff. I know he enjoyed his work with the team and was well respected for his diligence.I lost contact with him soon thereafter, but can only imagine that those attributes served him well in life. Be Thou at Peace, Thou Son of the South
