Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Paul H. Roggenkamp on October 16, 2012:

Dave, it has been almost a half a century since we worked out together and competed in our sport of gymnastics, but the fun we had and the bond we forged have been unchanged for all these years. I was honored to be part of your wedding to your beloved Ruthie; and I wanted the best in the world for both of you. The news of your ultimate sacrifice in Viet Nam is etched in my memory, and I still feel the pain of the immeasurable loss for your family, our class, the US Army, our nation, and of course, myself for being denied the continuation of your friendship and companionship.

You were a bright light in a sometimes cloudy, dismal world. You relished the challenges of a rigorous life and mastered the most difficult of them with the ease of a great athlete and disciplined man. All of us who called you friend were blessed because of the time we did spend with you. You made us all better for the association. You embodied the motto of "Duty, Honor, Country", and I know how you cherished your wife, family and friends.

My friend, you inspired and encouraged me, and you will continue to be a source of strength, fond memories, and brotherly love until I breathe my last breath. I pray and look forward to the time when we will meet again to continue our bond of respect and love. No man could ask for a greater friend.

Rest in God's hands, my brother...
