Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Ramon M. Ong '63 on August 29, 2002:

John, I met and spoke to you only once in my life. You were a Plebe running across the Central Area. I was a member of the grauating class. I made you stop because I noticed a unique 2-letter name "OI" on your shirt, which was even more unusual than mine (in an American setting). I made you turn your nametag upside-down so it would read "10." Then I asked, "What's your name, Dumbguard?" You wisely answered,"Sir, my name is 'ten'!" And I let you continue on your way and out of my life forever.

Today, I read your name again in the "TAPS" website and the memory of that incident 39+ years ago became so vivid all of a sudden! But that's all I recalled about you. I wish I could say a little bit more... about your personality, your deeds and your career.

I'm glad you graduated and joined the Long Gray Line. Someday we shall meet again in that big Assembly Area up in the sky. And maybe you'll forgive that foolish college prank I played on you and then we'll have a big laugh about it. In the meantime - Be thou at peace!
