Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Dawn Lindgren on July 28, 2000:

The death of my second cousin, Art Bonifas, still haunts my mind. I was 10 and basically unaware of the finalities of death and the horror's of war, but at a very impressionable age. My life was simple. TV was for cartoons and entertainment. That was, until the day the phone rang, and we were instructed of the events that led to Art's death. The television took on a new identity. Someone had captured the attack on film and they were broadcasting it nationwide.
How horrible for Marcia and his children.
How horrible for his parents.
How horrible I felt, watching helplessly at images relaying the last moments of his life.
As I review photos from my mother's childhood that include the outings with her cousins, I try to imagine and remember the man he was and would become, but my vision is clouded with the image television brought to me of how painful his death was for a country he loved.
