My first contact with Chuck was that first terrifying day, 2 July 1962. It was also my first contact with that clear Southern accent. It was during those awful two months that I could learn to appreciate his moral courage to stand up and take whatever was being dished out by the cadre. We turned out to be 'mates in a rare (for those times) Beast Squad wherein all of us made it to that distant target of Graduation, June 1966. Of course, while differing company assignments estranged us, at times we'd cross paths and I'd renew the appreciation of a fine gentleman. |
