Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Wylie W. Fulton on October 21, 2017:

My Brother Lt. Col. (Ret.) LARRY S. FULTON died Saturday morning in Alabama (born April 25, 1946; died Oct. 14, 2017). He was 71 years old. Larry was one of the most "accomplished" individuals I can think of ... grew up as the 5th child of 10, belonging to a dirt farmer and his hard-working wife (DUB & EDITH FULTON. Blacksburg SC). We had almost NO material legacy when our parents died ... but they DID give us MUCH by way of spiritual and family heritage which we hold dear at this day, and I believe always will.

Larry succeeded in Blacksburg High School, and on the football field, went on to graduate with honors from West Point Military Academy, served honorably as an officer in the US Army, with various tours of duty over his 20 years, including Alaska, VietNam, West Point, and his final tour at the space center in Huntsville AL, where he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Then he went into the private sector as a vice president with MEVATECK, a corporation in Huntsville which grew greatly under his term as part of the senior leadership team. He loved and enjoyed life and sports and grandchildren and family, and his church (not necessarily in that order).

He was my red-headed younger brother and when he came along, the first four of us being dark-headed, we gave him a "hard-time" because of his red hair ... he was DIFFERENT and we called him "ODD," among other teasing nicknames. Later in life, with all his successes, he earned our RESPECT and you can believe we quit calling him such "put-down" names!

But even as kids growing up in the country and on the farm, it became early an obvious fact that he had a SHARP mind and was going to succeed wherever his journey would take him. THAT he did! And earlier this year, when he faced what was evidently his "final challenge," he got busy "setting his house in order" and very bravely faced his FINAL ROLL CALL. He accomplished this with the same persistence and dignity that marked all that he did.

GOD'S WILL IS DONE. Larry is gone home. We accept the fact, mourn our loss, and rejoice that we had such a SPECIAL BROTHER. I'll miss the many phone conversations we had together, as we talked plainly about a variety of issues ... we laughed a lot, solemnly cried a little bit, but always with our eyes on the goal that the Lord might be pleased to set before us.

MISS HIM? More than one could ever tell! But I can praise the Lord that HE gave LARRY to be our brother, and when his work here among us mortals was done, the Lord called him back again to His Holy presence. "We bow to Thy Holy Will, O Lord! Amen." Mourning, but not without hope, Wylie.
