Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bill Bahr, USMA '69 on November 5, 2007:

A fellow Kansan, I'd first met Claude in the Advanced Russian course at West Point. He was the best student in our small group, and I wound up paired with him for our regular conversations incorporating new words to be learned. My homework technique was to concoct humorous skits using the words that I'd slave over while writing. Partner Claude, it seemed, could then memorize his part of the conversation almost instantaneously. Needless to say, we did well together. I'd next seen Claude during our 2004 Reunion, where we playfully traded a few Russian rejoinders. From one of my later class-list postings, Claude learned that my brother Bob works in the amputee ward at Walter Reed. I put them in touch, and they saw each other often. Bob tells me that all who knew Claude there held him in the highest esteem for his volunteer work.

USMA classmate, First Regiment-mate, and Russian-partner, may you rest in peace.
