I served with Mike as fellow captains at Fort Lewis, Washington from about 1975 to 1977 and assumed command of B 3/39th Infantry from him as he became the S3 of the battalion as a captain. Even then it was obvious Mike was a step ahead of most of us. I had the privilege to inform him he had made major below the zone after I had moved to division staff and saw the below the zone promotion list with Mike and his good friend Lawson McGruder both on it. Lost track of him after that, but always will have profound respect for him. |
