Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Sue Payne on December 13, 2014:

I just found this page because I was looking up Randy as today is the Army Navy game. I was stunned to find that he had been dead for so long. Randy and I began dating when Reagan was running for office, and I remember him with much love as he was always so kind to me, even though back then I was a flaming liberal. In fact, the night of Reagan's big win Randy got me a pass to the big election night party, introduced me to so many folks, and we even met Lionel Hampton. He only allowed me to go that night if I wouldn't tell anyone that I voted for a democrat.

He lived in a high rise back then in Arlington and I lived in Montgomery County, MD. I was about 28, and he was so good looking.....in fact, the first night I met him was at a bar called the Dubliner, and he spotted me sitting at the bar, and he finally came over....I will never forget it......he came over and introduced himself, then said to me "my god, you're beautiful, I just couldn't go home without telling you that."

That was really the kind of guy he was.

He was also high energy, but he was a real man, playing rugby with over 35 crowd, and yet, he could be so sweet and gentle. I took a job out of state and we drifted apart, although I believe if I had stayed in DC we may well have gotten very serious. He was a wonderful weekend guy....loved to fix breakfast on Sunday mornings, and loved to walk and drink mint julips on Kentucky derby day.

I don't think his childhood was very happy and I think he did indeed have some demons that he fought. I know he loved the military, and we visited the Vietnam memorial together and he was visibly moved by the names that he knew on the wall.

Every so often I would try to find him to say hi, but now I know why I could never find an address or number as he had passed away. I thought about him often, particularly when I moved back to the area. I wish I had reached out to him, I regret that I did not.

I loved Randy, even though at times he was difficult to love, but I hope he found love in the end, and didn't die alone.
