Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Charles Reilly on February 13, 2014:

I served with Lt. Smith in "L" Company Rangers with the 101st Airborne Division (1970-71). He was one of the finest officers I ever met and was well-respected by everyone in our company. He had been severely wounded in November of 1970 while trying to extract a critically injured Ranger from the field. After he healed up, he volunteered again to rescue a wounded Ranger in February of 1971. The helicopter he was on never made it back and all aboard were killed. His loss was particularly hard on our company. Lt. Smith is remembered by all who knew him as a brave and gallant soldier who sacrificed his life in the line of duty while trying to save one of his fellow men. He was a personal friend of mine and also to the members of my Ranger team. He will be forever in my thoughts and prayers.
