West Point, 1969

Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Bill Bahr, USMA '69 on April 1, 2007:

Coming into this world just three days after he did, I unfortunately did not meet Denny McKelvey until the summer of 1969, when a group of us Signal Officer Basic Course graduates headed off for Airborne School at Ft. Benning, GA. There my SOBC roommates and I joined with Denny and his gang to rent a house we affectionately called "the hovel." Denny was the entrepreneurial CIC, and it was to him that we paid our rent and tribute. I recall that, as an airborne student, he was a little anxious about his running endurance and boot shining. After hours, however, Denny was very much the confident, easy-going, engaging, and accommodating slum-lord. I think of him and the three weeks we lived together every time I'm asked to regale others about my early days of glory. I'm hoping that others who perhaps knew him better might here share their memories of this fine classmate, officer, and gentleman.
