Be Thou At Peace

Posted by William H. Ward on July 5, 2012:

I was in John's Cadet Company (E-2) for two years. I remember as a casual cadet acquaintance his being somewhat of an enigma, but a jovial enigma. And man, what a body-builder he was! I was unaware of his "Century" status until re-reading Bill Bahr's Howitzer excerpt. Perhaps we met there (on the area) a few times as well. I vividly recall a little vignette from Beast Barracks days: Somehow, on some form we filled out, John checked "Muslim" [or was it Hindu or Budist?] as his religion. When grilled about that at table, his response was that he had no particular religious "preference," so that seemed as good as any! We were all shocked early in our careers to hear of his death, and I for one wish I had known him better.
