Be Thou At Peace

Posted by William H. Ward on August 14, 1999:

I remember Mel Tinker as a warm, engaging individual with whom you'd never hesitate to walk up to and strike up a conversation--even if you didn't know him. At the two year mark at West Point, we were all in some class status meeting in North Auditorium. For whatever reason, the first and last files in GOM (General Order of Merit) were called out, and they stood and took the perfunctory bow. And "Mr. Tinker" was announced as the middle man in the class (and he did likewise--to more than muffled cheers).

The Register of Graduates notes that Mel died in an auto accident in Wurtzburg, Germany. We lost a good man that day.
