Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Steve Gordon (Flash) on January 3, 2009:

Chuck and I met while I was serving on Firebase Mace. Chuck was an Officer in Delta and I was NCO in Charlie, but the idea we both came from the bush meant we had a lot in common. We took advantage of the best Clubs anytime we were able to get to a bigger base. In the Saigon area the Officers' clubs were good so I was an Lt., but anytime we got around the Air Force Chuck became a Sgt. One time at the Air Force base we had to stay in their barracks as both of us overindulged due to no fault of our own and the base closed down to people coming and going. (They gave us free drinks when they found out we were Grunts.)
I lost both my grandparents on my mother's side while serving with Chuck, and he provided great therapy.
We went out to our log site one morning and I found something Chuck wanted so he convinced me he could use it more when he got home than I could. When he got home he sent me a 38 special I now carry, as Missouri has the Right to Carry. I think about Chuck and how he made Nam so much better, and I know he is in Heaven visiting with friends.
