Be Thou At Peace

From the "Howitzer" -- 1969

Robert Sterling Noreen, Chicago, Illinois, A-1

Hailing from the windy city, Bob donned the gray triple-A for the first three years at USMA. Always on the defense, but one step ahead of writs, quill, his bank account, and borrowing from his roommates, and frequently experimenting with a day old beard, he helped make life easier in the East Barracks Penthouse. In ten years, Bob will be the best guy in the class to visit. Just go to Colorado and ask for "Nor's Place."

USMA classmate, may you rest in peace.

Note: A number of years ago Bob contacted me, a current Chicagolander, about collaborating on an effort dear to his heart. Being from Chicago, Bob knew about the Chicago Tribune Building's distinctive feature of having embedded in its outer walls relics from all over the world, including chunks from the Pyramids, the Great Wall, and even the cave where Jesus is said to have been born. Bob wanted to have a piece of West Point included. In delegating, he gave himself the job of securing a stone from Fort Putnam. My assignment was to get interest and permission from the Tribune Tower. Alas, I was not successful. However, as I understood from Bob near the end of our last reunion, he still meant to complete his mission, even if it meant propping a stone up against the building with a note. As I pass by the Tribune Tower every so often, I have to look and wonder.... : )
