Be Thou At Peace

Posted by Kyle Green on February 12, 2022:

I just recently learned of LTC Ireland's passing. I was saddened to hear. He and I served together at Fort Riley, KS. He was the Commander of the 201st Support Battalion, I was the S-3. He was my favorite boss of all who I served under. He represented what a leader should be. He was fair and decisive. My favorite memory of him was during a NTC Rotation to Fort Irwin. We had to move the BSA into a new location during an overcast night. LTC Ireland had told Commanders to use two each of the mini Chem-lights on the back of each vehicle same color to prevent any collisions. Well no one paid attention and used every variation available. Once we got into the area, I spent most of the night policing up stragglers and getting them into their designated areas. I finally made it back to the TOC early in the morning. I found LTC Ireland pretty frazzled and not happy. He looks up at me and says did you see all the different color Chem-Lights? Right now there is a pilot in a 747 flying above looking down on those lights thinking he is over LA International and making preparations to land. I had to keep a straight face because he was serious at the moment. Needless to say we all got a pretty good ass chewing and rightfully so. RIP Sir. You served your soldiers and your nation well.
