This Eulogy for COL Lynn Moore was in the 11 Nov 21 Army West Point Rugby Newsletter: * X * X * X * Former Army Rugby coach, Col. Lynn David Moore, proud West Point graduate class of 1970, passed on 3 October 2021, at his home in Laguna Vista, Texas. Lynn, nicknamed Chief by his classmates, was captain of the Black Knights' 1969 football team. As a running back that year, he rushed for 983 total yards with 208 of those on 40 carries against Navy. Army 27-Navy 0. Col. Moore received the Edgerton Award, the Thurston Hughes Memorial Award, the Ringsdorf Award and the prestigious Army Athletic Association Trophy given to the Cadet of the First Class who rendered the most valuable service to athletics during his time at West Point. COL Moore was named Sports Illustrated "Back of the Week" in recognition of his performance in the 1969 Army-Navy game. As a side note, Col. Moore played on the lacrosse team in the off season. Following graduation, COL Moore was in the last class that entered the war in Vietnam. He was operations officer for H Co. (Airborne-Ranger), 75th Infantry Regiment. His was with the last Ranger Unit out of Vietnam. Upon his return to the states in 1974, the New York Giants invited Lynn to attend spring training. COL Moore made what he later said was one of the most difficult decisions of his life. He chose to make the Army his career. "There are more important things in life than football," Moore said in an interview with "Stars and Stripes." This began his 29-year military career becoming a commanding officer in the United States Army Infantry. Along the way, COL Moore received his Master's degree in English from the University of Oklahoma. While there he played rugby for the Sooners. COL Moore became a certified pilot, Jumpmaster and Army Ranger. He completed his general command and staff college training at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Over the course of his career, COL Moore was awarded the Legion of Merit Award, three Bronze Stars for campaigns in Vietnam, Rawanda and Panama. He also received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal/Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Joint Services Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and earned the Combat Infantryman Badge. In retirement, COL Moore was an avid golfer and fisherman. He and Rita enjoyed their annual golf outings with the Jim Crawford Class of 1970 golf group. Several winter golf gatherings were hosted by the Moores in Arkansas and Texas. In addition to reconnecting with classmates, these events always raised money for West Point. Lynn is survived by his wife, Rita, his daughter, Michelle Apotsos, husband Alex and two grandchildren Rowan and William.
